Practical examples and limitations
When to use this tool
Convert a JPG when an editing or delivery workflow specifically requires PNG. PNG avoids a further lossy JPEG encoding step, but converting a photo does not create transparency or restore the details lost in the original JPEG. Choose a format based on the destination rather than the extension alone.
Worked example
Convert an existing JPG, then compare its dimensions and file size with the PNG. A photographic PNG can be considerably larger while preserving the same decoded pixels. If a website only accepts PNG, this may be useful; if it accepts JPG and size matters, preserving a good original JPG may be the better choice.
What to check before using the result
A rectangular JPG normally has an opaque background; changing to PNG does not cut out the subject. Browser rendering can change metadata and color handling, so the PNG is not a byte-for-byte archival copy. Keep the original when provenance or original metadata matters.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Will converting JPG to PNG restore lost quality?+
No. PNG prevents additional lossy compression, but it cannot restore detail already removed when the original JPG was created.
Your images never leave your device.+
ImageMetaCheck reads your file with browser APIs on your device. The image is never sent to our server, stored in a database, or used for training.
