Practical examples and limitations
When to use this tool
Convert a photographic PNG when the destination needs JPG or when an opaque, smaller photo is acceptable. JPG cannot represent transparency, so choose a background color that matches the place where the image will be displayed. Logos and screenshots with sharp text may be better left as PNG.
Worked example
For a transparent product picture destined for a white catalog page, select white as the background and start at JPEG quality 90. Check thin edges and shadows after saving. If the final page has a dark background, a white-filled JPG can show a visible rectangle; preserve PNG or WebP instead when transparency is required.
What to check before using the result
JPG uses lossy compression. Repeated PNG-to-JPG conversions from an already compressed source do not preserve the original quality. Metadata and profiles can change during browser rendering. Inspect the actual downloaded output, especially antialiased borders and small lettering.
